KAMPALA. The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has raised alarm over the increasing number of road accidents across Uganda, calling for immediate government action to improve road safety and transport systems.
The party extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones and wished a quick recovery to those injured.
UPC attributed the surge in accidents to several factors, including narrow and poorly maintained highways, lack of road signage, and delayed repair of potholes.
The party also cited reckless driving, distracted driving, and the poor mechanical condition of many vehicles on Ugandan roads.
To address the crisis, UPC is advocating for stricter vehicle inspection measures, improved driver training through certified schools, and increased mobility of traffic police officers to enhance enforcement.
The Directorate of Traffic Spokesperson, Michael Kananura, addressing the press on Monday at Naguru Police Headquarters, reported three major road crashes recorded between March 20 -21, 2026.
The incidents were attributed to dangerous overtaking, speeding, and loss of vehicle control.
He warned that such reckless behavior continues to endanger lives, urging motorists to observe traffic rules, avoid high-risk overtaking, and ensure safe travel practices, especially during the Easter season.
The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety is currently conducting routine enforcement operations nationwide, promoting discipline on the roads, and encouraging the public to report violations through toll-free and WhatsApp lines, according to Kananura.
Across the three crashes, a total of 9 people were killed and 14 others injured.
