KAMPALA – 15th May 2026. Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has endorsed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the position of Speaker of Parliament ahead of the first sitting of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.
In a message posted on X, formerly Twitter, General Muhoozi described Oboth-Oboth as the best-performing minister in government over the last five years and declared his support for his bid for the Speakership.
In a post shared on his X account, Muhoozi said: “He has been the best Minister in our government for the past 5 years. I want to be the first to endorse him for Speaker of Parliament (2026–2031). God bless Hon. Oboth-Oboth!”
The endorsement comes days before Parliament convenes on Monday, 25th May, to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
However, Ugandan Media reported that Oboth Oboth has denied any knowledge of the endorsement, claiming he is not on social media.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Peter Odeke, has confirmed that 527 Members of Parliament have already been sworn in ahead of the opening of the 12th Parliament.
Odeke said 184 legislators took oath on Wednesday, 174 on Thursday, and 169 on Friday, completing most of the swearing-in exercise.
He noted that one Member of Parliament-elect for Bukuya County, Michael Bukenya Iga, is yet to take oath and is expected to do so in due course.
Odeke also said Parliament still has a vacant position for the Kalangala District Woman Representative following the death of MP-elect Hellen Nakimuli, pending replacement.
The Deputy Clerk urged Members of Parliament to respond to invitations sent out for the first sitting to help Parliament organise attendance and seating arrangements.
He also thanked parliamentary staff, performers, and brass bands for supporting the swearing-in ceremonies over the last three days.
Uganda’s 12th Parliament currently has 527 sworn-in Members of Parliament, with the NRM holding the majority at 372 seats. Independents have 68 MPs, NUP 48, UPC 12, UPDF 10, FDC 9, DP 6, PFF 2, and ANT one seat.
