KAMPALA, 1st May 2026. Police have warned schools across Uganda to strengthen safety measures following a fire outbreak that destroyed students’ property at Mukura Union Vision Primary and Secondary School in Mukura Town Council, Ngora District.
Speaking during the weekly police press briefing, at Naguru Police Headquarters, Kampala today, Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the incident happened on Yesterday Sunday, 31st May 2026 while students were attending morning prayers.
According to police, no deaths or injuries were recorded, but property belonging to students in the affected dormitory room was destroyed. Preliminary findings indicate that the fire may have originated from a mobile phone left charging inside the dormitory.

He added “A student was reportedly charging a phone in the dormitory and left it there while going for prayers. It is highly suspected that the defective charger or phone caused the fire”.
Rusoke warned school administrators and parents against ignoring safety measures in schools, saying negligence in handling electronic devices and lack of preparedness continue to expose learners to danger.
He urged schools to prohibit unauthorized charging of phones in dormitories, install fire extinguishers and other fire suppression equipment, conduct regular inspections, and work closely with police fire and rescue teams to carry out fire drills.
Meanwhile, police also announced the arrest of two suspects in Gulu City over the alleged manufacture and distribution of counterfeit motor vehicle and motorcycle lubricants. The operation was conducted jointly with the UPDF and internal security agencies following intelligence reports from Bardege – Layibi Division.
Police recovered suspected sealing and packaging equipment used in the illegal business and cautioned motorists against buying cheap lubricants from unauthorized dealers, warning that fake oil has damaged many vehicles.
Rusoke also clarified reports regarding expiry of contracts for police directors, saying renewal of contracts in the Uganda Police Force is a routine process handled by the appointing authority.
